the only time I've seen them for real is from a hot-tub in the Canadian rockies when I was 18. . .
(have you ever seen the film Local Hero? that has a scene or two with northern lights)

they'll max in 2012 because of the solar winds and be visible as far south as Missouri, maybe even Oklahoma
